General Description of the Enterprise No. 33 Shave

L -7-1/4”, Bowl Dia. At the lid – 3-1/8”

The above pictures shows the general shape of this shave. The cutting blade has 13 teeth and has approximately ¼” depth adjustment. The thumb tab used to open the lid is simple and perpendicular to the edge of the lid. 3624 is on the underside of the lid and 3623 under the handle. Changes from this general description will be described in each shave below.

No numbers on the inside of the lid or under the handle. This shave is in such good shape it almost appears to be a reproduction.

Here are five configurations of the top lid of the Enterprise No. 33 ice shaves that I have. I have seen another configuration on eBay with the patent date across the center of the top. Interesting point – The top row of shaves have 3624 on the under side of the lid and 3623 on the under side of the handle. The shaves in the bottom row and the one seen on eBay, do not have the numbers on either part. I wonder, why the difference? Could the sets without the numbers be - made after the patent expired, or another manufacturer? Any thoughts! It seems like the more I look, the more configurations I find! Do you happen to have a different configured Enterprise No. 33 shave?

L – 8-1/6”, Bowl Diameter 3-3/4”, height - 3-3/4”,

ENTERPRISE MFG CO, PHILA. PA USA, PAT. JULY 4, 93, NO 43 on the lid, pivot on end of handle, hole in end of cone to allow for adding flavoring to the ice cone prior to dispensing. Blade cutting depth is adjustable.

ENTERPRISE MFG COMPANY, PAT. May 4, 1893, ICE SHREDDER NO.34 around the rim of the top. Very faint and hard to read. Small teeth on the shaving blade. The handle and support for the blade are cast and the lid and bowl are made of sheet metal. Material is non-ferrous.

There no special markings on the shave. There is a single long smooth fixed position blade to shave the ice. The cup attaches to the base with a short twist. The shave is made of aluminum.

L – 7”, The pick - 1-1/2”

The body and handle are a single casting and the lid is separate casting. Both are steel or iron. Six teeth are cast in the body casting. The pick is loose but fastened in the casting but can not be removed. Two small tabs on the inside of lid to help keep it aligned with the body. The chamber is approximately 2-1/2”X2”X1-1/4”. No markings on the shave.

Scoop Shaves with Ring Top to hold a Cup
Pat. 2,146,419 Issued Feb. 7, 1939 L – 6-1/2” Bowl Dia. – 3” MADE IN USA and “4” on the underside of the handle. The top has a hole to accept a cup and is hinged at the handle. A cup would be placed in the lid, the ice shaved to fill the cup, then flipped open and the cup removed. There is a single adjustable smooth blade. The shave is made of cast iron.
L – 9-3/4” Bowl Dia. – 3-1/2” There are some marking on the underside of the handle, but not enough to determine the source. The top has a hole to accept a cup and is hinged at the top of the shave. A cup would be placed in the lid, the ice shaved to fill the cup, then flipped open and the cup removed. There is a adjustable single smooth blade. The shave is made of aluminum.
L – 8”, Bowl Diameter – 2-1/2”, Bowl wall thickness – 0.37” There are no markings on the shave. The top has a hole to accept a cup and is hinged at the handle scoop junction. A cup would be placed in the lid, the ice shaved to fill the cup, then flipped open and the cup removed. There is an adjustable single smooth blade. The shave is made of aluminum.
L – 7-3/4”, Bowl Diameter – 3”, T.R. HALL BURLINGTON N.C. on the underside of the handle. Single smooth adjustable blade. Single smooth adjustable blade. Made of aluminum.

Scoop Shaves with No Lids

Pat. 587,230 Issued July 27, 1897

The only marking is a “2” on the underside of the handle. The shaving teeth are integral to the scoop.

The only marking is a set of curved lines on the top of the handle near the scoop. The shaving teeth are integral to the scoop.

Two shaves of same size, shape and teeth configuration. The shaving teeth are integral to the scoop. Both have PAT. P’N’D’G just to the right of the opening. The top shave has a “1” to the left side of the bowl bottom and the bottom shave has a “2”.

L = 6-3/4”, Bowl Dia. = 2-7/8”

ENTERPRISE is on the handle. The shaving blade is riveted to the bottom of the scoop and is in a fixed position. It appears the loop at the end of the handle can be used as a cap lifter. The shave is made of steel.

L = 6-3/42”, Bowl Dia. = 3”

ARTIC is on the handle. The shaving blade is riveted to the bottom of the scoop and is in a fixed position. It appears the loop at the end of the handle can be used as a cap lifter.

L = 6-1/2”, Bowl Dia. = 3”

The only marking is a “26835” on the underside of the handle. The shaving blade is riveted to the bottom of the scoop and is in a fixed position.

Pat. No. 482,883 Issued Sept 20, 1892

L = 9-1/2”, Bowl Dia. = 2-1/4”

There are no marking on the shave. The five shaving teeth are attached with screws and are facing forward, thus, you have to push to make shavings whereas the other shaves you pull the shave to make shavings. The shave is made of a non-ferrous metal..

Scoop Shaves with Wood Handles

The only markings are on the handle – HANDY ICE SHAVER, Compliments of INDEXED COUPON CO., LaPORTE, INDIANA. The shaving teeth are cut into the bottom.

L – 7-7/8”, Bowl Dia. – 2-1/2”

The only markings are on the handle – EBNER ICE & COAL STORAGE COMPANY, VINCENNES, IND. Martinsville, Washington, Seymour, Ind. Carmi, Flora, Olney, Ill. Two sets of shaving teeth are cut into the bottom. One set to shave when pushing and the other when pulling.

L – 9-5/8”, Bowl Dia. – 2-1/2”

The only markings are on the handle – Boise Ice & Produce Co., PHONE 603, Watch For The Big White Truck, ICE & COAL The cap lifter on the end of the handle has three tabs. The shaving teeth are cut into the bottom. The side of the bowl is slightly higher than the other wooden handled shaves.

L – 9-5/8”, Bowl Dia. – 2-1/2”

The only markings are on the handle but most is too worn to read. The cap lifter on the end of the handle has three tabs. The bowl has a lid the shaving teeth are cut into the bottom.

Misc. Shaves

Pat. No. 2,267,979 Issued Dec. 30, 1941

L – 10”

CLIFF ICE SHAVER, MINNEAPOLIS, MINNESOTA on a placard in the front of the shoot. The shave looks very similar to a wood worker plane. There is an adjustable blade with four points. The opening on the side allows the shaving to be expelled while shaving. The tool is made of aluminum.

Pat. No. 1,521,479 Issued December 30, 1934

L – 7-3/8”, Diameter of the opening – 2”

MARVEL on the circle at the handle and R. S. 1919 along the handle. A cup would be placed in the opening, the ice shaved to fill the cup, then the cup removed with the ice shavings.

L - 10-1/4", W -3", H -6", All metal, 3"x10" flat surface. A & W are interlaced in the two leg/supports at the ends of the shave top. As provided by Bob Roger….It is most likely Adams & Westlake Co., Chicago. They introduced one like it in 1889. Their mark was A & W and they made a variety of kitchen ware. An adjustable blade mounted with two screws. Provisions at the bottom of the end supports to mount on a board, counter top or other convenient location.

L – 7-7/8”, diameter of base plate3-3/4”, All cast iron. Two screws to adjust the depth of the shaving blade. The top inside diameter of the base will hold a 3-1/2” jar or other container to catch the shavings. The blade is positioned to cut on a pushing stroke.”

L – 6”

CHIPPER runs up the center of the handle and JOH A. MAXWELL & ASSOC is on one side and DETROIT, MICH. PAT. PEND on the other side. The adjustable blade is smooth.

L – 3-5/8”, W – 2”, H – 1-1/4”,

Two blades, one on the bottom surface and one on the rear curved surface. The blades are double edged razor blades. MADE IN USA on the middle on the top of the base between the two blades. The wing nuts allow easy replacement of the blades. I don’t think this is an ice shave to collect ice for snow cones since there is no area to capture the shaved ice. Further more the blades seem to be rather light to shave ice. I’ll keep searching to determine the real purpose for the tool. If you know the principle purpose for the tool, please let me know. One suggestion indicated the tool might be used to scrape decals off windows.
