Bladed Ice Chippers

The ice chippers in this section are a little more robust than those in the multi-picks chipper section.  The section is divided by the number of points on the blade.

Three Points

   

L = 8-1/4” extended, 8-1/4” compressed; the handle compresses 1-1/2”.

All metal.  PAT. PEND. is stamped on the shaft holding the points and there is a spring in the handle.  The tool is held together by a heavy gauge wire from the shaft support through a hole in the end of the handle and then looped.  Image size

L = 8-3/8”, Solid metal. The curved metal piece above the blade serves as a guide when chipping or shaving ice.  AMERICAN MACHINE CO. PHILADA.  PAT APR. 8, 1884, on back of guide.  The leading edge of the guide is tapered to a sharp edge for shaving the ice block.  This chipper was called the STAR chipper.

L = 8-1/4”, Round metal cap on the end of the handle and a cap lifter in the blade support.  NAT WIRE MADE IN USA in a diamond shape on one side of the blade support.

        

L = 8”, Eight sided metal cap on the end of the handle and a cap lifter on the blade support.  KEENO ICE CHISEL on one side of the blade support.

 

L = 7-3/8’, Knob type handle and cap lifter on the blade support.  BROWNE ICE CHISEL BROWNE LINE in a rectangular box on one side of the blade support and PAT APPLD FOR in a circle near the chipping end of the three-pointed blade.

 

L = 8-5/8”, Cylinder type handle and a cap lifter on the blade support. ICE CUBE CHIPPER TRADE MARK REG. (bracketed by an unusual symbol) on one side of the blade support.

L = 8-3/4”, Cylinder type handle and a cap lifter on the blade support.  THE COOLERATOR COMPANY plus some other markings on the handle.

   

L = 8-1/2”, Knob type handle and cap lifter on the blade support.  KEENO ICE CHISEL, BROWNE, LINE in a rectangular box on one side of the blade support and MADE IN USA in a circle near the chipping end of the three-pointed blade

L = 7-3/4”, Round flat cap on the end of the handle, cap lifter on the blade support and a brass ferrule.  No special markings.

L = 7-3/4”, Round flat cap on the end of the handle. No special markings.

L = 6-5/8”, Multi function tool with sales tag.  Some of the functions identified on the sale tag are; Ice Tray Releaser, Ice shave, Ice Chipper Can opener, Bottle Cap Remover, plus several others.  PAT PEND MADE IN USA and H & L MGG CO. are on the bottom of the sales tag.

Four Points Wood Handle

Patent  143,957 Issued October 28, 1873 

   

L – 9-1/4’,

AMERICAN ICE CHISEL PAT OCT 28, 1873 stamped on the upper portion of the blade.   Brass ferrule.

L = 22”, LANDERS, FRARY & CLARK, AETNA WORKS stamped on the blade.

Brass ferrule, very deep valleys between points. No markings.

Appears the metal cap is missing.  Brass Ferrule.  No markings.

L – 9-3/8”,  Bomb shaped handle.  No markings.

L = 9-3/4”, No special markings.

L = 9-5/8”, GIFFORD-WOOD CO. stamped in center of the blade.

 

L = 8-1/2”, C W DUNLAP NEW YORK in a circle near the center of the blade.

Patent No. 655,692 Issued Aug. 14, 1900

L = 11-1/8”, PEERLESS DANA & CO. CIN. O ICE CHIPPER PATD AUG 14, 1900 is stamped on the inside of the chipper near the handle.  The metal portion of the tool is made of sheet material formed and stamped and attached to the handle with nails.

L = 12-7/8”, Four points on one end of the head and one point on the other end. The rivets attaching the head to the adapter are worn and loose.  No special markings

Patent No. 402,173 Issued Apr. 30, 1889

L = 12-3/4”, Four points on one end of the head and one point on the other end.    No special markings.

  

L = 7-1/2”, Profile view shows a sharp increase in thickness of the blade support at the ferrule.  No special markings

    

L = 10-3/4’, Screw-eye on end of the handle for hanging.  Two flats on opposites sides of the handle near the top.  No special markings.

   L = 10”, NORTH BROS. MFG. Co. PHILA. PAT APR. 8, 1884 is stamped on the bottom side of the cutting blade.  Brass ferrule. The blade is riveted to the guide and support.  This configuration was referred to as the CROWN chipper.

           

L = 9”, BUFFUM TOOL CO LOUISIANA, MO. Stamped on the bottom side of the cutting blade and in raised letters on the top side of the guide/ support structure. The blade is attached to the guide/support by screws.  A “Swastika” symbol is positioned on the raised area where the handle attaches to the guide/support structure. The Swastika is a very ancient symbol representing wealth and peace.  Hitler made it one of grave and bad meaning.

          

L = 10”, AMERICAN MACHINE Co. PHILADA. PAT APR 8, 1884 is stamped on the bottom side of the cutting blade.  Brass ferrule. The blade is riveted to the guide and support.

L – 32-3/4”, No markings. Wooden handle shaft and grip.

Four Points – All Metal

Patent No. 281,644 Issued July 17, 1883

         

L = 14-1/2”, Slider weight on handle shaft. Markings on each side of blade support.  A “4” on one side and PAT JULY 17, 83 on the other side.

L – 14-1/8”,

All metal, slider weight on handle, loop at top of handle, PAT APLD FOR on blade holder, half circle hole through blade support.  Oval handle and slider shaft made of 0.25” wire steel.  Slight traces of red paint.

L = 14-5/8”, Slider weight on handle shaft.  PAT JULY 17 83. stamped on one side of blade support and there is a half moon shaped hole on the blade near the support.

L = 10-1/2”, Slider weight on handle shaft. No special markings.

 

L – 9-3/4”, KLEAN-KUT ICE PICK, PAT PEND on the slider, 1-1/2" ring on top of shaft holding slider weight.

            

L – 7”, CROWN NO 2 on opposite sides of the handle around the large diameter of the handle.

 

 

L = 7”, Handle has six indented area around the handle. No special markings.

L = 8-7/8”, Hand has same ridge on both sides.  GIFFORD-WOOD CO. stamped in center of the blade.

L = 10-3/8” extended, 8-3/4” compressed.

Spring in the handle. LASH’S BITTERS on one side of the handle and NATURAL TONIC LAXATIVE on the opposite side.  The other two sides have a random texture surface. MADE BY BRIDPORT. HDWE MFG. CORP. on one side of the blade and PAT APPL’D FOR on a scroll on the other side.

L = 6-3/4”, GERMANY on the blade between the hole and the points. Ice pick/cap opener on opposite end from the chipper.  Wording on the sales/gift box – ICE PICK and SHAVE   If you’ve bottles to open or ice to shave, This Ice Pick and Shave much labor will save.

Patent No. D27,210 Issued June 15, 1897

L = 8-1/2”, Chipper on one end and a pick on the other.  MOLINE CHANNEL ICE COMPANY on both sides of the chipper blade  

L = 8”, Simple construction.  Ball on top of tool could be used as ice cracker. No special markings..

L = 9-1/4”, Heart cutout on the center of the blade.  PAT APL FOR stamped on the blade near the attachment with the handle.  Cap lifter with a single tag on the opposite end of the handle.

 

L = 9-3/8”, Heart cutout on the center of the blade.  Flattened area in the handle has WS AARON FURNITURE CO, ALTOONA PA on both sides.  Some of the lettering unreadable.  Single tab in the cap lifter.

               

L = 9-3/8”, Hole on center of blade and PAT AP FOR stamped on top of blade near the handle attachment area.

 

L = 9-3/8”, Hole on center of blade and PAT AP FOR stamped on the under side of blade near the handle attachment area.  This chipper has deeper cuts in the blade creating longer points.

 

L – 23-3/8”, All metal.  “STAATSBURG” is stamped along the tooth root.

 

L – 35-1/2”, “649” on the left edge and “GIFFORD-WOOD CO.   HUDSON (unreadable), N.Y. centered on the blade.  All metal.

Five to Eight Points

Five Points

Patent No. 189,196 Issued Apr. 3, 1877

     

L = 11”, Five points plus one point plus a shave blade.  A scoop behind the five points. PAT’D APR 3, 1877 on the metal area between the scoop and the ferrule.  Some of the lettering is very difficult to read.

   

L = 8-1/8”, Five points.  BRIDDLE OF CRISFIELF MADE IN U.S.A. in the center of the blade

Six Points

.           

 

L = 7”, Six points. CHIPZICE PAT APPL’D on the handle.  All metal.  Stamped and formed from sheet stock.

L – 9”, Brass handle, six points.  No markings.  Bought this as an ice chipper but it may be a leather working tool.

 

L = 10-1/4”, Six points. No special markings

Length – Left = 11-5/8”, Right = 11-1/4”

Six Points. The chipper on the left has deeper cuts between the points than the other chipper. Neither chipper has any special markings.

L = 15-1/2”, Six points. No special markings.

Seven Points

L = 12-7/8”, Seven points.  No special markings.

L – 25-3/4”, Seven points on blade and two holes on the blade.  No markings on the blade.

L – 28-1/8”, Seven points on the blade.  No markings on the blade.

Eight Points

Patent No. 766,558 Issued Aug. 2, 1904

         

L = 9-1/2”, Eight points Four points on each axis of an “X”.  Four of the points can be easily removed leaving a single row of four points.  WAGNER MFG CO. CEDAR FALLS, IOWA PATENTED AUG 4, 1904 on the fixed blade.
