Ice Tools with Slider Handle and A Sliding Weight in the handle

This section is a collection of all the sliding weight or sliding handle tools found elsewhere in the collection.  If there were more than one tool for the same configuration, only one item is shown. Notice that all of these tools are all metal.

L =11-7/8” extended and 9” closed. A 2-7/8” stroke. No special markings

Similar Ice Picks with different finishes

        

L = 11” extended and 9” closed. A 2’ stroke. No special markings

L = 11-3/8” extended and 9-1/2” closed. A 1-7/8’ stroke. Nickel or tinned finish on the handle.  No special markings

These three picks have the same shape handle but three different manufacturing processes for inserting and retaining the pick.

   

L =12-1/2” extended and 7-3/4” closed. A 4-3/4” stroke. A hole through the handle just below the flatten knob on the top of the handle. This allows access to the top end of the pick shaft during the manufacturing process to flatten/pinch the heated top end of the pick shaft. This process held the pick in the handle.  No special markings

    

L =12-7/8” extended and 8-1/2” closed. A 4-3/8” stroke. Screw in top of handle to change picks. No special markings

Patent 23,969 Issued May 10,1895 - Variant

 

L – 13-3/4“,  Compressed – 11-1/8”, Handle diameter – 1-1/8”,

Handle slides on pick – 2-5/8” stroke. Two holes in opposite sides of handle, at the base of the knob, to insert cotter pin in top if pick.  Pick shaft diameter - 0.32".

L = 14-34” extended and 11-1/2” closed. A 3-1/4” stroke.   Pick is 9-3/4” long a diameter of 0.37”.  Brass handle is 5” long and 1” diameter.  Markings near the top of the handles “4-20-20 (CDB)” and at the bottom of the handle “AJP  ALOO1OO10P”.  I don’t have the slightest idea of the meaning of the last set of characters!

 

L - 8-1/8” extended, 6-6/7” compressed.  PAT. PENDING on the handle.  The handle splits in half lengthwise and is held together with a rivet.  This tool is a pre patent of the one shown below.-

    

L – 11-1/2” extended, 8-3/4” compressed.  PAT 1-7-1902 is on the handle. The handle splits in half lengthwise and is held together with a wire wrapped around the center of the handle and looped back into an indent on two sides of the handle.  See small picture.

Sliding Weight in Handle or on Shaft

L = 18-7/8”, with a 14-1/2” stroke.

Patent No. 441,333 Issued November 25, 1890; however, the configuration is like Patent 452,555 issued May 19, 1891.

 

L = 12-1/2”, All metal. Heavy metal weight slider in the handle, ALASKA” on one of the blades and “PATD NOV. 25, 1890” on the other blade.

L = 10-3/8”, All metal. Heavy metal weight slider in the handle, ALASKA” on one of the blades.

Patent No. 281,644 Issued July 17, 1883

   

L = 14-1/2”, Slider weight on handle shaft. Markings on each side of blade support.  A “star” on one side and PAT JULY 17, 83 on the other side.

L = 14-5/8”, Slider weight on handle shaft.  PAT JULY 17 83. stamped on one side of blade support and there is a half moon shaped hole on the blade near the support.

Pre-Patent No. 281,644 Issued July 17, 1883

 

L – 14-1/8”,

All metal, slider weight on handle, loop at top of handle, PAT APLD FOR on blade holder, half circle hole through blade support.  Oval handle and slider shaft made of 0.25” wire steel.  Slight traces of red paint.

 

L – 9-3/4”, KLEAN-KUT ICE PICK, PAT PEND on the slider, 1-1/2" ring on top of shaft holding slider weight.

L = 10-1/2”, Slider weight on handle shaft. No special markings.

L – 9-1/2”, 3-1/3” Stroke, Brass ferrule, wood handle, sliding weight on handle shaft.  Item listed on page 554 of Simmon Hardware Company 1883 catalog.
