Ice Tools with a Spring in the Handle

The purpose of a spring in the handle is to provide the user with a means of hitting the same spot when trying to chip the ice block.  The point of the pick is placed on the spot and the handle pushed down and impacts with the pick.  Then without removing the pick from the impact point the spring allows the handle to be raised for another strike with the pick striking at the same point.   In general this configuration came after the sliding handle configuration.  This configuration allowed the user to use one hand while the sliding handle tools required the use of two hands, one to hold the pick on the spot while raising the handle for repeated thrusts.
